Maternity leave for women in government service in Tamil Nadu has been gradually increased from 90 days. In 2016, the maternity leave in the Jayalalithaa-led government was increased to 270 days by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms. The offer was extended to non-standardized and temporary employees and was ordered in 2020.

But Rajguru, a lawyer from Chennai, filed a case in the High Court claiming that the ordinance was not enforced. These include working in government hospitals in various districts of Tamil Nadu.No action has been taken against them. Therefore, it was directed that the concerned employees should also be ordered to pay maternity leave. The matter came up for hearing in the Chennai High Court today.

At that point, there should be no discrimination in granting maternity leave as standard or non-standardized civil servants. The judges ordered the Tamil Nadu government to provide uniform maternity leave. There is happiness on all sides with this order. Finally, the MK Stalin-led DMK government announced in the revised budget for the financial year 2021-22 that the maternity leave for women government employees would be increased to 12 months.
