Bangalore: The Karnataka education department, which successfully held board exams amid the Covid pandemic two years ago, is again confronted with the issue of hijab.
The state administration has decided not to allow students wearing hijab to sit for examinations, following a decision by the Karnataka High Court's Special Bench. To ensure that the tests run smoothly, police will be stationed near the testing centres.
The state government has begun conducting SSLC (Class 10) tests, which will last until April 11. This academic year, 8,73,846 students have registered for SSLC exams. Exams will be held in 3,444 locations across the state. All test centres have been outfitted with CCTV cameras, and prohibitory orders will be enacted in and around them.
The teaching profession has been under severe strain over the past two years. During the Covid epidemic, the teachers pledged their lives and worked while conducting board exams. Despite the fact that all pupils passed, the department's initiative was lauded. Students who were impacted by Covid had to take their exams in a different location.
Many of the teachers were also exploited for Covid-related tasks, and many of them died as a result. According to education department insiders, the hijab problem is now equally stressful for them.
