Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi also had a meeting with Prime Minister Modi.
In a boost for the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, the party won two of the three seats in recent by-elections, maintaining its strength in the 68-member state assembly at 40 seats. This victory helps stabilize the party after a political crisis caused by cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha polls.
The Congress secured victories in the Dehra and Nalagarh seats, while the BJP won in Hamirpur. Chief Minister Sukhu's wife, Kamlesh Thakur, won the Dehra seat, marking the first time Congress has won there since its creation in 2012 after delimitation. Kamlesh Thakur won by a margin of 9,399 votes, receiving 32,737 votes against the BJP's Hoshiyar Singh, who garnered 23,338 votes. Hoshiyar Singh had previously resigned as an independent candidate and joined the BJP.
Congress' Hardeep Singh Bawa claimed the Nalagarh seat in Solan district. In Hamirpur, the BJP's Ashish Sharma defeated the Congress nominee by a margin of 1,571 votes, securing a victory in Chief Minister Sukhu's home district.
