Shimla: Since the monsoon began on June 27, Himachal Pradesh has experienced significant rain-related devastation, with 40 fatalities and damage estimated at ₹329 crore, according to the state emergency operation center.

On Friday night, a cloudburst in Raitua village, Anj Bhoj area of Paonta subdivision in Sirmaur district, led to a fatality when one person was swept away. Paonta Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gunjeet Cheema confirmed the incident, stating that a rescue team from Puruwala police station, assisted by local residents, launched a search operation along the five-kilometer stretch of Raitua Nullah, which flows into the Tons River.

After an overnight search, the body of Aman Singh, a 48-year-old resident of Danda Anj village, was found in the Tons River on Saturday morning. Singh had attempted to save his cowshed and daughter when the nullah flooded following the cloudburst. While he successfully saved his daughter, he was swept away by the flash floods. His daughter’s alarm led to a search effort by local villagers and the authorities.

The local Meteorological Department issued a warning for moderate flash floods in Sirmaur and Shimla districts over the next 24 hours. An orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in isolated areas of the state on July 23. Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for heavy rains in isolated areas on July 21, 22, 24, and 25, with potential damage to crops, vulnerable structures, and disruptions in traffic and waterlogging.
