Shimla: There is good news for drinkers. While the Himachal Pradesh government has made liquor cheaper, it has now become more accessible to consumers. Now you can get a bottle of wine from a petrol pump to a neighbouring grocery store. The Cabinet of the Jairam Thakur government in Himachal Pradesh has given the green signal to the new excise policy for the state.

In order to check smuggling of liquor from neighbouring States and to increase the revenue as well as to increase the price of liquor, the Government has approved renewal of contracts for 2021-22 at a renewal fee of 3% of the cost of unit, contract to retail excise contracts. The government's new excise policy will make low-priced brands of foreign liquor manufactured in India cheaper. Reduction in licence fee and excise duty and transfer of quota in inter-district and district were approved. Liquor manufacturers and bottlers have been provided the facility to supply 15% of the desi liquor quota to the retail licensee.

Retail licensees will be able to get the remaining 85 per cent quota from the supplier of their choice. Earlier, the quota was 30 per cent. During the meeting, excise policy for the financial year 2021-22 was approved under which a revenue generating target of Rs.1829 crore has been set this year. 228 crore more than the financial year 2020-21 with a growth of 14%.
