Every year on September 14, Hindi Diwas, also known as National Hindi Day, is observed to commemorate the day on which the Constituent Assembly established Hindi (written in Devanagari script), the country's official language. Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as the nation's first prime minister, chose September 14 as the date to observe Hindi Diwas.

The 2020 World Hindi Day falls on January 10 in addition to Hindi Diwal. This day celebrates the first World Hindi Conference, which had 122 participants from 30 countries attend and was held in Nagpur on January 10, 1975. Promoting the Hindi language internationally was the conference's main goal. Dr Manmohan Singh, the previous prime minister, established World Hindi Day in 2006 with the intention of promoting Hindi around the world.

Hindi, an Indo-Aryan language written in the Devanagari script, was recognised and declared the official language of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. It is one of the 22 official languages of the Indian Republic.

It is observed in both offices and in schools and colleges. Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of activities on this day, such as language competitions, essay and letter writing contests, and other activities.
