Mumbai: The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government on Thursday took a dig at Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray, saying the ban on loudspeakers would harm Hindus more than Muslims. The MVA, while advising the MNS president, said that he should give an "ultimatum" in his own home and not for the state. Nationalist Congress Party leader and deputy CM Ajit Pawar said in a sharp tone, "This is not a state based on some of the time limits given by anyone but on the basis of laws and the Constitution. They can give such 'ultimatums' in their homes if they want. "
On the condition of Raj Thackeray that the MNS campaign will continue till all loudspeakers in the state are removed or switched off, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar made it clear that public addresses in public will be taken against those violating the laws. Congress General Secretary Sachin Sawant said there are at least 2,400 Hindu temples in Mumbai which will not be able to use loudspeakers for their prayers and other rituals and this will also affect the much-revered 'Kakad Aarti' at the popular Saibaba temple in Shirdi.
"Out of a total of 2,404 temples and 1,140 mosques in Mumbai, only 20 temples and 922 mosques have taken police permission for loudspeakers. Most mosques have already stopped giving 'Azaan' under the public address system. However, about 2,200 temples and 222 mosques will not be able to use loudspeakers. On the other hand, Shiv Sena leader Kishore Tiwari said that apart from the Shri Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai and other important temples across the state, the loudspeaker ban will affect major Hindu festivals like Ganesh Utsav and Navratri.
