Japanese automaker Honda has set an ambitious target to eliminate traffic fatalities involving its vehicles by 2050. The company is taking a comprehensive approach that emphasizes improving driver behavior, enhancing education, and forming partnerships with various stakeholders.

To drive this initiative, Honda has launched a youth-focused safety program and expanded training initiatives, including a new driver coaching app. The company collaborates with governments, industries, and communities to enhance road safety, focusing on achieving its goal through innovative safety systems and ongoing research.

Honda's safety strategy is designed to encompass not only new vehicles but also older models still in use. The company is committed to developing effective safety measures at its crash-test facilities in Ohio and Japan. Technologies such as Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structures and Honda Sensing are instrumental in reducing collisions and paving the way for automated driving solutions.

In addition to technological advancements, Honda recognizes the need to improve driver behavior and overall traffic conditions. This requires a concerted effort involving partnerships with governments and community organizations.

In 2023, Honda, in collaboration with Discovery Education, launched the "Honda Safety Driven" initiative, engaging over 250,000 students through a virtual field trip. The program includes new educational tools such as:

  • Crash Course Game: This game teaches students about crash dynamics and the importance of safety choices.
  • Pedestrian Safety Bundle: This package educates learners about road safety, incorporating lessons on e-bikes and e-scooters, supported by Team Liquid.

In addition, Honda operates rider education centers and has piloted the START program for young drivers at its Indiana plant, with plans to expand these efforts.

Since 2021, Honda and its foundation have contributed over $6 million to nonprofit safety programs. A new grant cycle is open until October 31, 2024, supporting traffic safety and mobility initiatives.

The company's Driver Coaching app, launched in June 2023, connects with Apple CarPlay to provide real-time feedback and personalized improvement tips for new drivers.

Brian Bautsch, director of North American safety strategy at Honda, said, “Advancements in safety technology have saved countless lives. Honda will strive to continue leading in safety innovation with its new vehicles, but getting to zero fatalities in all Honda products on the road by 2050 is impossible without a collaborative effort. Honda is committed to safety in all its forms to rapidly advance technology, education, advocacy, and collaboration with like-minded people and organizations. In short, our path forward is Safety for Everyone, with everyone.”
