A record polling was held for the local body in Hong Kong last Sunday amid a vigilant police system. By 7.30 pm, 63 percent of the votes had been cast, while there was three hours left for voting. Peaceful voting is being described as a success of the Carrie Lam administration, while some analysts say more voting is a demonstration of strong desire for democracy on behalf of the people.

Hong Kong Chief Administrator Carrie Lam said after casting her vote that her government takes the bodies' recommendations seriously. They play an effective role in governance. So people have a feeling of trust towards them. At the same time, voting reflects this sentiment of the people. Lam hoped that peace and stability in Hong Kong would be maintained in the coming days as well and that people would try to forget the sufferings caused by the six-month-long unrest. Nobody wants Hong Kong to return to the chaotic old conditions.

According to information received from sources, the movement started in Hong Kong in protest against the proposal of the extradition treaty with China gradually turned into a movement demanding democracy and independence. This movement lasted for about six months in which heavy violence occurred. Hong Kong's image was damaged due to this incident, along with thousands of crores of public property and business. This round emerged as the biggest challenge for Chinese President Xi Jinping, who assumed power in 2012. Now that the situation has been under control for a week, people are relieved.
