New Delhi: Each year, on the 21st of October, India celebrates the anniversary of a historic event that played a crucial role in its quest for independence – the establishment of the Azad Hind Government. This significant day marks the proclamation of India's first independent provisional government, known as the Azad Hind Government, a momentous step in the fight against British colonial rule.

Visionary Leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose

On the 21st of October in 1943, Subhash Chandra Bose, a charismatic leader in India's struggle for freedom, made a historic announcement in Singapore. He formally declared the formation of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind, which translates to "Free India." Within this government, Bose assumed multiple roles, serving as the Head of State, Prime Minister, and Minister of War.

The Significance of the Azad Hind Government

The establishment of the Azad Hind Government bore profound implications for India's struggle for independence. It not only provided Bose with a platform to negotiate with the Japanese, who controlled parts of Southeast Asia during World War II but also facilitated the mobilization of Indians residing in East Asia to rally behind the cause of liberation.

Subhash Chandra Bose's Exile and Leadership

Subhash Chandra Bose had been placed under house arrest by British authorities in 1940. Nevertheless, he executed a daring escape, finding his way to Berlin on the 28th of March, 1941. In Berlin, the Indian community warmly embraced him as their leader, bestowing upon him the title of "Netaji" and greeting him with the inspiring salutation of 'Jai Hind' (Salute to the motherland).

The Birth of the Azad Hind Fauj

The formation of the Azad Hind Government was not an isolated event but part of a broader strategy. In 1942, the Indian Independence League was established with the aim of creating the Indian National Army (INA) for India's liberation. Subhash Chandra Bose arrived in East Asia on the 13th of June, 1943, in response to an invitation from Ras Bihari Bose, to lead this pivotal initiative.

The INA initially took shape under the leadership of Mohan Singh and Japanese Major Iwaichi Fujiwara. It was composed of Indian prisoners of war from the British-Indian Army who had been captured by the Japanese during the Malayan campaign and the fall of Singapore.

Subhash Chandra Bose's Inspirational Call

Subhash Chandra Bose was not just a charismatic leader but also a brilliant strategist. He coined the famous battle cry "Chalo Dilli" (Let's march to Delhi), which stirred the hearts of countless Indians to join the cause. His rallying cry promised independence, and he resolutely declared, "tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe Azadi dunga" (You give me your blood, and I will give you freedom).

Recognition and Legacy

In the aftermath of World War II, the British decision to put INA personnel on trial in November 1945 triggered massive protests and demonstrations across India. The Azad Hind Fauj, under the leadership of Bose and others, had successfully reignited the fervor for independence.

It's noteworthy that several countries recognized the Azad Hind Government, underscoring its importance on the international stage. However, the Indian National Congress, led by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, did not officially recognize the Azad Hind Government. The reasons for this decision are complex and rooted in differing ideologies and strategies within the broader Indian freedom movement.

The anniversary of the Azad Hind Government serves as a poignant reminder of the unyielding spirit and unwavering commitment to freedom that stirred countless Indians. It pays tribute to the legacy of Subhash Chandra Bose and the valiant soldiers of the Azad Hind Fauj who made immense sacrifices for India's independence. Today, this historic day reminds us of the extraordinary chapter in India's quest for liberty, a chapter that holds a cherished place in the nation's history.
