Iodine alone isn’t the cause of iodine deficiency problems, but other micronutrients play a very important role as well.  The minerals – iron and selenium are equally important.  Studies have shown that selenium deficiency is the cause of problems as well because selenium is also important in the formation of thyroid hormones.  If you think you’re low in iodine get a check for thyroid problems.

Some suggestions to make sure you are getting the required daily amount of iodine include:-

  • Try eating organic as far possible.
  • Eating seafood twice a week will provide enough iodine to fulfill your average iodine requirement.
  • Add sea vegetables to your diet.
  • Seaweeds.
  • Bread – whole grain and high-fiber varieties.
  • Supplements – if you are not getting enough iodine then supplements may be necessary.

A simple test to check that you are getting enough iodine can be done at home.  Paint a stamp-size square of orange colored iodine on the inside of your wrist and make a note of the time you start the test.  You probably have an adequate supply of iodine if the patch on your arm disappears slightly within 24 hours.  If the patch disappears within 24 hours or within 18 hours you may have a mild or moderate deficiency and if the patch fades away completely within 12 hours it indicates you may have a severe deficiency.
