China reports that a woman has died from a combination of bird flu strains H3N2 and H10N5. The incident occurred due to cross-species transmission, according to authorities. However, they reassure that the risk of the virus spreading from person to person is low.

The woman, aged 63 and from Anhui province, had existing health issues. She showed symptoms including cough, sore throat, and fever on November 30 and passed away on December 16, as per the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration.

Authorities conducted screenings of those in close contact with the woman, with no positive cases detected. Additionally, there were no suspected cases found.

Genetic analysis of the virus revealed that the H10N5 strain originates from birds and lacks the capability to effectively infect humans, states the agency.

Officials label the incident as a sporadic case of bird-to-human transmission. They emphasize that the risk of the virus spreading among people remains low, with no instances of human-to-human transmission reported.

China's vast population of both domestic and wild birds provides an environment conducive to the mixing and mutation of avian viruses.
