Nirupa Roy needs no introduction. The actress became popular by doing the role of mother in films. There was a time when she was in every picture as the mother of the lead.  She was born on January 4.  On her Birthday have a look on her interesting journey.

Nirupa Roy was married to Kamal. Her real name was Kanta. The couple moved to Mumbai as Kamal wanted to become actor. One day he saw an advertisement of a Gujarati production house in the newspaper. Kamal gave the interview, but he was not selected. But his wife Kanta who went along was offered the female lead role in the movie Ranakdevi. The owner of Sunrise Pictures also changed the name of Kanta and kept it as Nirupa Roy. She was married at the age of 15 to Kamal Roy. Nirupa Roy reached Mumbai after marriage. They had two sons - Yogesh and Kiran. Nirupa Roy's real name is Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara. Nirupa Rai changed her name after entering the film industry.

This name became so famous that Nirupa Roy's husband also changed his surname to Roy. Nirupa Roy also did glamorous roles in the initial phase but she got recognization by the roles of mother. Nirupa is the  'Mother of Bollywood'. Nirupa Roy earlier did films that were either based on Hindu mythology, or on historical characters. Like Har Har Mahadev, Nagpanchami, Shivkanya, Amar Singh Rathore, Rani Roopmati and Razia Sultan.

The actress also featured in films like Bedard Zamana, Do Bigha Zameen, Ghar Ka Modi, Kangan. Nirupa Roy was born in Gujarat.  She played the role of Devi in 16 films. In the character of Devi, Nirupa Roy left such an impression that people started considering her as a real goddess. Not only this, people used to go to his house and touch his feet and used to sing hymns. Nirupa Roy was considered the queen of religious films in the 50s.
