As demand for essential products such as drugs, surgical masks, ventilator, and cleaning supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic skyrockets, manufacturers all over the world work hard to meet this demand.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, supply of essential goods and lifesaving drugs needs to be ensured without any disruption. The manufacturers of these products need to scale up their production to meet the ever-increasing demand. This is additionally complicated by the fact that the supply chain has gone to a toss” says Ananda Yuvaraj from Pearland, TX, one of the leading subject matter expert on ERP systems and a Planning Specialist of Indian origin.

The workers in those manufacturing plants are working continuously to meet the demand. While social distancing is in place, the interaction between the workers at such manufacturing industries need to be minimized to keep the workers at safe.

We asked Ananda how manufacturers keep up with this increased demand despite social distancing. He said ‘Automation tools’.

With the help of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions in place, these essential goods manufacturing industries can automate the various processes involved in the production, enable seamless flow of data across the various components, and accelerate the production adhering to compliances.

“During the pandemic, the ERP system helps to reduce interaction between various workers involved in different processes by automation and the integration of these different processes in the manufacturing pipeline. It thus helps to maintain social distancing at the work place and at the same time optimize the resources needed for manufacturing and enable faster turnaround times” Ananda said. “The seamless flow of data across systems helps the manufacturing industry to implement paper-free interaction between the people involved to alleviate the transmission of virus that happens though contact.”

Ananda who has worked on several critical projects at Fortune 500 companies such as Accenture, CenterPoint Energy, GlobalFoundries, Huntsman, to name a few, suggests implementing ERP tools like Systems Applications and Products (SAP) in place.

Ananda recounts one of his implementations that is of utmost importance in the present scenario “By strategically using a Calibration system and Mobile Asset Management solution, we were able to have the work orders of technicians and calibrators completed without anyone sharing the papers or desktop computers.”

To sum it up – Disease can be spread through contamination by both social contacts, and by transmitting via objects such as paper. In the manufacturing and services industries, it is therefore essential to move towards paper-free, and contactless methods. Industries further need to be responsible for regular disinfecting and cleaning of surfaces while providing its employees a safe working environment.
