KOCHI: In light of the recent Israel-Gaza conflict, authorities in Kerala, India, have significantly bolstered security around the historic 'Paradesi Synagogue' located in Mattancherry. This move comes in response to the hostilities stemming from Hamas's attack on parts of southern Israel on October 7.

This synagogue, with a rich history spanning more than 450 years, ranks among the oldest active Jewish places of worship within the Commonwealth of Nations. Recognizing the symbolic importance of this site and the presence of two Jewish community members in the vicinity, officials decided to take precautionary security measures.

Additionally, the Kerala Handicrafts Dealers and Manufacturers Welfare Association also engaged with local law enforcement, advocating for increased security in Mattancherry.

A senior police official revealed to PTI that the number of security personnel at the centuries-old synagogue was augmented as a preventative step. Currently, only two members of the Jewish community reside in Mattancherry, an area commonly referred to as Jew Town in Kerala.

The police official explained, "We had increased the number of police personnel at the synagogue and the surrounding area soon after the conflict erupted in the West Asian region, considering the presence of two Jewish community members."

It's worth noting that the local traders, primarily from the Muslim community, approached the police expressing concern that any untoward incident could adversely impact their businesses.

Despite these increased security precautions, trustees of the synagogue have confirmed that the influx of tourists to the site has continued without interruption.

Dating back to 1567, this synagogue is one of the seven synagogues associated with the Cochin Jewish community in the former Kingdom of Cochin. The Cochin Jewish community was historically a prosperous trading group in Kerala, wielding significant influence in the spice trade.

However, most of this community emigrated to Israel following the formation of the state in 1948. The recent conflict initiated by Israel, which began with Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, has brought about tragic civilian casualties on both sides. In recent days, a greater number of Palestinian lives have been lost, and Israel has imposed severe restrictions on the Gaza Strip, including the cutoff of electricity, food, and water supplies.
