How the AI-powered tool from NASA will alert users to "dangerous space weather"

USA: We are informed in advance about the adverse weather events on the earth thanks to the weather forecasting facilities. However, what about solar storms or other dangerous space phenomena?

NASA will take care of us, so we won't have to worry anymore. The space agency has created a new computer model that "sounds the alarm for dangerous space weather" by combining artificial intelligence and satellite data.

The solar wind, or "solar material", is constantly being thrown into space by the Sun. Shorter, more intense eruptions are also occasionally observed.

So-called "geomagnetic storms" are generated when this solar material comes into contact with Earth's magnetic field. The damage caused by these storms can range from minor to severe, but it has only recently gained attention.

The Carrington event, the strongest solar storm ever recorded, occurred in 1959. This resulted in telegraph stations being set on fire, which halted the transmission of messages.

Incidents like the Carrington incident happening today will have far more serious consequences. Power outages, ongoing blackouts, and interference with international communications systems can all result.

Deep learning is an AI technique where computers are trained using historical data. Using this method, the team was able to establish a correlation between geomagnetic disturbances observed at ground stations around the world and measurements of the solar wind taken by space missions.

The team developed the DAGGER (Deep Learning Geomagnetic Disturbance) computer model using this type of AI, and it is claimed that it can "quickly and accurately predict geomagnetic disturbances around the world" Can issue these warnings up to 30 minutes before the disturbance.

In a blog post, NASA said the model "can make predictions in less than a second, and predictions are updated every minute."

Two geomagnetic storms that occurred in August 2011 and March 2015 were used to test DAGGER. In any case, DAGGER "can quickly and accurately forecast hurricane impacts globally.

The company "DAGGER is the first company to combine AI with precise measurements from space and across Earth to deliver timely and accurate predictions for locations around the world," NASA said.

According to Vishal Upendran of India's Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, "This AI now makes it possible to make rapid and accurate global predictions and inform decisions in the event of a solar storm, thereby reducing or even preventing the devastation in modern times." That can be stopped." Society."

According to Upendran, the open source computer code for the DAGGER model can be used by power grid operators, satellite controllers and telecom firms to make predictions that meet their needs.

Early warning can help them "protect their assets and infrastructure from an impending solar storm," by temporarily shutting down systems or repositioning satellites.
