Twitter has announced that it will soon stop allowing users who do not have a Twitter Blue subscription to use SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA). According to the microblogging service, users will have until March 20 to disable text-based login authentication codes on their accounts. As a result, a number of users who depend on SMS codes to protect their accounts will need to sign up for Twitter Blue. Twitter will continue to support alternate 2FA strategies at no additional charge for those who don't want to subscribe.
Twitter has stated that the phone-number mechanism was misused by "bad actors," which is why free access to SMS-based 2FA was shut down. However, the microblogging service also states in its post that access to SMS-based 2FA for Twitter Blue subscribers "may vary by country and carrier."
You can choose a more secure option to protect your account via authentication apps if you don't want to pay Twitter a hefty monthly fee to use SMS-based two-factor authentication to secure your account (Twitter Blue costs up to Rs. 900 per month in India). Before completing the steps below, you can download apps like Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and our favorite, the open source Aegis Authenticator.
1.Go to the settings page on the computer's Twitter website.
2.To enable two-factor authentication, select Security and account access > Security.
3.If your account has the Text message option enabled, turn it off.
4.Select Authentication app now and click "Get started."
5.Scan the QR code shown on the Twitter website using the authentication app you downloaded.
6.To complete the setup procedure, enter the six-digit numeric code shown on your authentication app.
