Om Prakash started his career in the year 1950 with 'Dasi'. In lieu of working in this film, he got 80 rupees. This was Omprakash's first film. Omprakash had a good friendship with music composer C. Ramchandra. Together they gave many superhit films including 'Duniya Gol Hai', 'Jhankar', 'Lakere'. Om Prakash also worked as a producer for very film.

Om Prakash made his directorial debut with Aap Ki Kasam (1974) and is known for making over 20 films with the letter ‘A’. The one notable exception, Bhagwaan Dada (1986), starring Rajinikanth, Sridevi and a child artiste named Hrithik Roshan. Hrithik Roshan who is one of the popular actors in Bollywood now is the grandson of Om Prakash. Om’s daughter is married to Rakesh Roshan.
