PARIS: On Sunday, Hsieh Su-Wei and Wang Xinyu rallied a set down to defeat No. 10 Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez on Court Philippe-Chatrier and claim the French Open women's doubles championship at Roland Garros. Their score was 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-1. Hsieh and Wang won their first doubles championship of the season in just their second tournament after joining forces in Strasbourg, capping off an incredible fortnight in which they defeated five top-seeded couples.
The 37-year-old Hsieh, playing in her 60th Grand Slam doubles main draw match, won a second-place finish at Roland-Garros and her fifth women's doubles Grand Slam trophy. In 2013, 2019, and 2021, she also captured three Wimbledon doubles championships. It was the 21-year-old Wang's first major victory in just her third Grand Slam doubles match. Townsend and Fernandez dominated the first set with their aggressive play, but early in the second set they found themselves down a break.
“It is very special as I was not expecting to play here and don’t know who I play with,” Hsieh said. “Because at this time on the clay-court season, the middle of the year or something like this, it’s hard to find a partner.” She found the perfect one in the 21-year-old Wang, whose first major came on her Roland Garros debut.
It was the first major final in doubles for Fernandez, the 2021 U.S. Open singles runner-up.
