Hugh Jackman has made a heartfelt tribute to famed Hollywood director Richard Donner, who died on Monday at the age of 91.

The Aussie actor, 52, shared an Instagram post on Tuesday morning in which he recalled Donner's iconic movies and warm personality.

'Today we lost one of our most talented, courageous, cheeky, funny, loyal directors to have ever made movies. Richard Donner,' the X-Men star wrote.

Hugh added that he and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, had lost a 'great friend'.

'Lauren [Donner's widow], we send all our love to you and the whole family and the hundreds of dogs he rescued,' he continued.

'Your movies, stories, your laugh will always be in our hearts.'

Donner's wife, Lauren Schuler Donner, confirmed news of the director's passing on Monday.

Details surrounding the cause of death have not yet been revealed.

Donner is best known for directing several classic films from the 1970s and 1980s, including The Omen, Superman, the Goonies and the Lethal Weapon series.

He collaborated with Hugh on X-Men and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, serving as executive producer.

The original X-Men film, released in 2000, was Hugh's first major Hollywood role.

Other Hollywood legends have paid tribute to the filmmaker, including Steven Spielberg, Sean Astin, Edgar Wright and Ben Stiller.
