In an interview, Huma recalled, "My dad thought I had lost my mind due to excessive studying. He advised me to go abroad and do an MBA. But when I told him that I would regret it my entire life if I didn't pursue my dreams, he became emotional. The next day, he took me to Mumbai and gave me an ultimatum: 'If nothing works out in a year, return home.'"
Huma moved to Mumbai in 2008 and auditioned for the film "Junction," which never saw the light of day. She then signed a two-year contract with a company to work on TV ads. Her first advertisement was with Abhishek Bachchan, and she went on to work with Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan in subsequent ads. It was during the shoot of an ad with Aamir Khan that Huma met Anurag Kashyap, who directed the ad. Anurag promised Huma a role in his next film, which turned out to be "Gangs of Wasseypur" (2012).
