Budapest: The Hungarian foreign minister stated on Sunday that continuing to support Ukraine with arms shipments will only serve to escalate the conflict with Russia.

Speaking to radio Kossuth, Peter Szijjarto offered his opinion on recent statements made by Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, who pushed for the delivery of fighter jets and long-range weapons to Kiev.

The minister claimed that the decisions made by EU lawmakers regarding Ukraine "have generally caused damage to Europe" and that additional arms shipments will only exacerbate hostilities.

He continued by denouncing the EU legislature, saying that it has "practically no credibility." Szijjarto claimed that the EU parliament is "one of the most corrupt organizations in the world" and cited a recent corruption scandal as evidence.

He was making reference to the recent arrest of Eva Kaili, the former vice president of the parliament, who was accused of accepting bribes from Qatar in exchange for improperly advocating on behalf of the Gulf state.

Szijjarto observed that while outside of "the transatlantic bubble," nations tend to favor peace over a bloody conflict, war rhetoric is "incomparably louder than the rhetoric of peace" in Western countries.

The minister continued by challenging Western sanctions against Russia. The tenth package of sanctions, he claimed, "will only be suitable for causing further damage to us Europeans, similar to the previous nine ones," because they have failed to persuade Moscow to end the conflict and Europe's economy has "faced incredible difficulties."

Hungary has been critical of Western sanctions against Moscow ever since the start of extensive hostilities in Ukraine almost a year ago. Hungary is heavily dependent on Russian energy. Additionally, it has resisted providing Kiev with arms support or allowing the transfer of weapons across its border with Ukraine.
