Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II construction will begin in the first week of January 2024, with the work starting in the Old City, covering the stretch from MGBS to Chandrayangutta. This phase of the project is being led by Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML), a joint venture between the Telangana Government and the Central Government.
According to N.V.S. Reddy, the Managing Director of HAML, property demolitions along the route will start in the last week of December. The demolition process will follow the Land Acquisition Act, and geo-technical studies, along with road barricading, will also commence. This work is part of the larger Metro Phase-II project, which spans 76.4 km across five corridors with 54 stations. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.24,269 crore.
Minimal Land Acquisition Except in Old City
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has already allocated funds for the project and is actively overseeing its progress. Most of the land required for the metro line, except in the Old City, will be government-owned, limiting the acquisition of private properties. In the Old City, however, properties will be acquired, with owners being offered Rs65,000 per square yard.
Reddy also emphasized that none of the 106 religious or heritage structures in the Old City will be impacted by the metro project. Engineering solutions are being designed to preserve these sites while completing the metro work. Additionally, citizens will be invited to suggest station locations and names.
Plans for Elevated Metro and Access to the Airport
Except for a 1.6 km stretch inside the Shamshabad International Airport, the entire Phase-II project will feature an elevated metro viaduct. Modern technology and double ‘U’-shaped girders will be used to expedite construction. The new metro lines will extend the existing 69 km of Phase-I, which includes the Red, Green, and Blue lines.
Once completed, passengers will be able to access the airport metro route from all three existing metro lines and their extensions. At Nagole, a twin station will be constructed to allow travelers from the Blue Line to access the airport route. The Green Line from Chandrayangutta and the Red Line from either MGBS or LB Nagar will also provide access to the airport.
In addition, HAML and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are working on a double-decker flyover-cum-metro rail system for a 1.6 km stretch between Miyapur and Madinaguda. The metro will generally run parallel to existing or under-construction flyovers along the new routes. While the metro will operate at 35 km/h on most stretches, higher speeds may be considered for the airport route.
