Hyderabad: Railways successfully operated two long distance freight trains for the first time in South Central Railway (SCR), which were thrice the length of normal freight trains. Among these trains named "Trishul" and "Garuda", Trishul was the first long haul train of South Central Railway, consisting of three goods trains, i.e. 177 wagons. This train left from Kondapalli station of Vijayawada division for Khurda division of East Coast Railway on 7 October. And the second train, SCR operated successfully from Raichur in Guntakal Division to Manuguru in Secunderabad Division under the name 'Garuda'.

In both cases the trains consisted mainly of empty open wagons for loading coal to thermal power stations. SCR is one of the five major freight-carrying railways. Some of the main routes like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Gudur, Renigunta, Ballarshah, Kazipet, Secunderabad, Guntur, Guntakal sections carry the bulk of SCR freight traffic.

Since the bulk of its freight traffic has to pass through these major routes, it is essential for SCR to maximize throughput of these critical sections. Path saving on congested routes, quicker transit time, maximization in all critical sections, crew savings, are the major operational benefits of running long distance trains, which help railways to better serve its freight customers.
