Hyundai Motor has issued a safety recall for 2,679 Ioniq EVs owing to a flaw in the acceleration system, which can result in slow, unintended acceleration even after the foot is removed in certain conditions. The problem affects cars built between January 21, 2016, and June 24, 2019, and sold as model year 2017-2019 vehicles.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) document, the cars may enter a 'fail-safe' mode during operation, causing the EV Ready lamp to blink. Acceleration and total power output are both lowered as a result. However, if a precise combination of sequences is fulfilled when in the 'fail-safe' mode, a gradual, unintended acceleration may continue even after the whole accelerator pedal is released.

The sequence is set up so that the accelerator pedal is quickly cycled when the 'fail-safe' mode is first activated. After that, there is a continuous period of full accelerator pedal use, followed by an abrupt release of the accelerator pedal. When all three of these things happen at the same time, the problem arises. The brakes and steering systems, however, remain completely functioning during this mode, according to the NHTSA.

Hyundai is issuing the recall to address the problem, which involves the vehicle continuing to accelerate after the accelerator pedal has been removed, thereby increasing the danger of an accident. The automaker, on the other hand, is unaware of any such incidence that may have occurred as a result of the problem.

Hyundai has begun notifying owners of impacted cars and asking them to take their vehicles to a local shop to have the problem resolved. The techs will update the software in the vehicle's Electric Power Control Unit without charging anything.
