The former prime minister and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo HD Deve Gowda is in a soup after losing the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Tumkur parliamentary seat. Such was the impact of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state that his grandson and Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil also lost to Sumalatha Ambareesh from Mandya.

The family managed to somehow salvage pride as another grandson of Gowda, Prajwal Revanna, won from the Hassan constituency, the only seat JD(S) secured in the Lok Sabha.

However, Prajwal on Friday told media persons that he is willing to resign from the seat and offer it to his grandfather who lost a Lok Sabha election for the first time in his political career.

“Today, to reinstate the confidence in the JD (S) cadre, we have to fill the gap left by Deve Gowda, therefore today before Deve Gowda and with the blessings of the people of Hassan I have decided to tender my resignation... So, by relinquishing this seat I want him to be victorious once again from Hassan with the blessings of the people and the leaders,” Prajwal said.

“It is important for me to do this to instil confidence in the JD (S) cadre and the party and give Deve Gowda the seat that’s rightfully his,” Prajwal said at the press briefing today.

Prajwal won the constituency from where his father HD Revanna is also an MLA. HD Revanna is a minister in the Kumaraswamy cabinet. He is expected to meet Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy around 1 pm on Friday.
