UK: "I don't want Jeff Bezos' boat, and I certainly don't want his rocket - but I just want to live," says George (not his real name), who works at Amazon's giant Coventry "fulfillment center" We do. "And have started organizing workers there.

"I shouldn't have to work 60 hours a week just to meet my needs," he says. "I have kids." Children need shoes, school uniforms and food. I received a letter from a debt collector.

I called him back, and we looked at our earnings and expenses, and he said, 'I don't know how you're making a living.' "To be fair, I've worked in worse places," he says of the warehouse's working conditions. The facilities are excellent."

"It's more about how you're treated; hence having to stand for 10 hours a day," he says. If you are caught sitting, you will receive an 'adaptation', which is the equivalent of six weeks' warning. It goes on your record, and if you're caught doing it again, you're fired. It's just playing mind games with you."

Employees, who work round-the-clock shifts, sort thousands of products into "totes," which are then sent to another Amazon fulfillment center, packed into individual orders, and sent to customers - And strict goals are given to fulfill them.

"It depends on the size of the item." So, if you are selling small items like jewellery, you will need around 350 per hour. It is similar to a dealing card. Then again, if you're doing big things like a toaster, it's probably 45-50 per hour."

He recalls a summer day when he and his colleagues, who had worked throughout the Covid pandemic, were told that their annual wage increase would be 50p per hour. Angered by this, he organized an unplanned dharna in the staff canteen.

Through a bullhorn, management came downstairs and asked you to nominate five people to come up and negotiate your demands. And I raised my hand saying, 'We can't because Amazon doesn't allow unions.'

If we choose five people to represent us, we have formed a union. "We started talking and worked out a plan." We just took a day off, didn't go to work, and decided to meet in Coventry.

And when GMB found out, they asked, 'Can we talk to you and tell us what we're offering?' I joined that day, and I'm still amazed at how many union members there are."

“We had a fair briefing at the start of Shift,” he says, “to say, ‘Amazon doesn’t negotiate with unions, won’t recognize unions, and is 50p of 50p. Then voting started for strike action."

"No other Amazon in the UK has done so far with union, and we are on the verge of going on strike." "I'm sure everyone is watching us," he says. "They may refuse to interact or even talk to us, but the rest of the world is watching."
