He was born in the Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan. He received music lessons from Ustad Jamal Khan and Pandit Chhaganlal Sharma. Jagjit wants to make his career in the field of singing, so he moved to Mumbai in 1965. Jagjit Singh did not have any place to stay or to eat when he came in Mumbai. He used to sing songs in marriages and parties under. Jagjit Singh started singing and sung various songs in his life. After a lot of struggle in Mumbai, Jagjit Singh got a chance to sing in Hindi cinema. In 1967, when Jagjit was looking for work, he met Chitra Dutta.
Jagjit Singh along with Chitra Singh released an album named 'The Unforgettable' in 1976. This was his first album. It made both of them star. Jagjit and Chitra's were winning the hearts of the people. After this, Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh started singing together in concerts. By the year 1980, Jagjit Singh had established himself as Ghazal Samrat through hard work. He sang immortal songs in films like Arth, Premgeet, Leela, Sarfarosh, Tum Bin, Veer Zara, Jism and Joggers Park.
While working with each other Chitra and Jagjit started liking each other. Jagjit asked for Chitra’s hand from her husband. He said, “I want to marry your wife.”. In December 1969, Chitra divorced her husband and married Jagjit. It is said that Jagjit Singh confess his love for Chitra to his husband. Chitra and Jagjit Singh had a son, Vivek. Vivek died in a road accident at the age of 20. Jagjit and his wife were deeply affected by his death. Jagjit wanted to get away from the world of music. He did not sing any song for almost a year.
