IAF helicopter crashes; two personnel killed

In an unfortunate event, India has lost two Indian Air Force personnel in a crash that happened on Majuli Island, Assam. The crash occurred at around 12:30 PM on Thursday at Sumoimari which is a deserted location on the island.

The aircraft they were flying in was a Microlight aircraft. Majuli Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha told that the plane got off from the radar at around 1:00 PM and the IAF informed the police about this. The locals of Sumoimari reached the spot and informed police who rushed to the spot.

The eyewitnesses told the police that the plane crashed with a loud noise and they saw flames of fire arising from the crash spot.

The plane took off from Jorhat air station for a routine flight with two pilots on board who were later identified as Wing Commanders Jai Paul James and T Vats. The crash site was about 20 km away from the air station.

Defence Spokesperson Lt Colonel Harshvardhan Pande told that the pilots tried to do an emergency landing but the plane crashed before it.

An inquiry will be conducted by a team set up to find out the cause of such a mishap.
