ICGS Varuna handed over to Sri Lanka

The Indian coast guard ship Varuna bid adieu today as it is formally given to the  Sri Lanka Navy in a ceremony which took place in Kochi, at the Naval Base in the presence of Rajendra Singh the director general of the Indian coast guard. 

The reason of delivering ICGS Varuna is to cementing and boosting historical and cultural ties between the two countries. In the speech, DG Rajendra Singh highlighted the significance of mutually-beneficial relations shared between both the countries.

ICGS Varuna was handed over to Rear Admiral Samantha Wimalathunge, Director General, Sri Lanka Coast.

India has earlier also handed over two OPVs of the Indian Coast Guard - Varaha in April 2006 and Vigraha in August 2008.

Varuna was Commissioned on 27th February 1988 at Mumbai, the ship as the training ship of Indian Coast Guard has served as the Alma Mater to about 600 officers of the Indian Coast Guard.
