The festival of Sharad Navratri brings with it a surge of enthusiasm and joy. It is widely believed that all the power in the world resides within the feminine form, which is why during Navratri, the worship of the divine goddess is paramount. The Navratri festival is also known as the 'Power Navratri' as it signifies the celebration of the goddess's power. Over the course of nine days, various forms of the goddess are worshipped, collectively known as the Navadurga. This year, Sharad Navratri is set to commence on October 15 and culminate on October 24, with the tenth day being celebrated as Dussehra. Navratri holds special significance for women, but it can pose certain challenges, especially when faced with menstruation during the nine-day period. In such cases, women often find themselves at a loss regarding what to do next.

Here's how women can conduct their worship during Navratri if they experience menstruation:
Avoid fasting during menstrual days: Women typically have menstrual cycles lasting between 22 to 28 days. Therefore, if there is a possibility of menstruation during Navratri, it is advisable not to observe the fast. However, for those determined to fast, they can choose to begin and end their fast on specific days. During this time, it is crucial not to touch the puja materials or the kalash meant for the goddess, instead, they can offer prayers from a distance.

Engage in recitation: If women plan to fast on the first and last days of Navratri, they can engage in the daily recitation of the Durga Saptashati. In case they are unfamiliar with the text, they can refer to it on their mobile phones and recite accordingly.

Delegate the puja: If there are concerns about the onset of menstruation during Navratri, it is best to avoid fasting altogether. However, if menstruation does occur during the fasting period after making the commitment, one can continue the fast. They can delegate the puja to another family member and can even choose to listen to the recitation of the Durga Saptashati.

Maintain mental devotion: For those encountering menstruation during Navratri, it is crucial not to feel disheartened or distressed. Instead, they should maintain mental devotion and continuously focus on the divine mother. Such a practice is also known to please the goddess Durga.

Navratri is a time of spiritual significance, and it is essential to respect the traditions while considering the physical well-being of individuals. By adhering to these guidelines, women can ensure that they observe the Navratri festival in a manner that is both devout and practical, honoring the essence of feminine power and spirituality.
