Srinagar: Inspector General of Police Kashmir, VK Birdi, led a comprehensive security and election review meeting at the range police headquarters in Anantnag in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting was attended by senior officials including DIG SKR Anantnag Javid Iqbal Matoo, the Commander of the 1st Sector, DIG CRPF Awantipora/Anantnag, DIG BSF, DIG ITBP, and all SSsP of the South Kashmir range.
The purpose of the meeting was to assess the security arrangements for the first phase of elections in the South Kashmir range. DIG SKR Anantnag provided a detailed briefing on security plans, including the camping locations for CAPF Coys, polling booth placements, strong room security, and logistical arrangements for CAPF units. Special attention was given to the security of polling booths and strong rooms. IGP Kashmir emphasized the importance of close coordination among all security agencies and instructed proactive measures to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process. He also directed officers to monitor anti-national elements closely and ensure the safe and secure movement of security forces on national highways.
During his visit, IGP Kashmir inspected various CAPF Company camping locations in Anantnag and provided immediate directions for improving facilities for officers and jawans. The review concluded with a detailed assessment of strategies and action plans aimed at ensuring the peaceful conduct of elections. The Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls are scheduled to take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting set for October 8.
The elections will be the first since the abrogation of Article 370. In the previous assembly elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12.
