Prime Minister Modi Urges Automobile Sector to Lead in Sustainable Mobility at SIAM Convention

New Delhi: At the 64th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of the automobile sector in setting a benchmark for sustainable practices. In his written address, Modi highlighted the sector's potential to drive substantial economic growth and thrive on rising demand, stressing the need for both rapid progress and sustainability.

The convention, themed "Sustainable Mobility Journey towards Viksit Bharat," featured discussions on how sustainable mobility can contribute to India's development goals by 2047. Modi emphasized that pursuing greener and cleaner mobility is crucial for future progress.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, the event's chief guest, reiterated the government's vision for sustainable transportation. He noted, "The automobile industry is essential to achieving the Prime Minister's vision of transforming India into a $5 trillion economy and making it the third-largest economy globally. Our goal is to become the world's leading auto manufacturing hub. Innovation and sustainability are key as we aim for carbon neutrality by 2070."

H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, highlighted the alignment of industrial growth with sustainability goals, citing government policies and the Make in India initiative as catalysts for promoting electric mobility.

Vinod Aggarwal, President of SIAM and Managing Director and CEO of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles Ltd., praised the industry’s strides in sustainable mobility. He noted that the sector contributes 6.8% to GDP and reported a 12.5% growth last year, with a turnover reaching Rs 20 lakh crore. SIAM's commitment to decarbonization and safety, including initiatives like the FAME program and advancements in EVs, is guiding the industry toward greener solutions.

Shailesh Chandra, Vice President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., called for a united effort to accelerate the shift to sustainable mobility. He emphasized the alignment with the government’s vision for sustainable, safe, and affordable transport, aiming for net carbon-zero in the future.

Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, also spoke about the organization's initiatives and dedication to sustainable mobility.
