Amritsar: Bhupinder Singh, the nephew of Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with illegal sand mining, has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a court. Honey came on the radar of ED during the investigation of the case of illegal mining in 2018. The ED had produced Honey before a Jalandhar court on Friday (February 11, 2022).

In the previous two hearings, the court had sent Honey to the ED's custody. CM Channi's nephew was in the custody of ED from February 8 to February 11. The ED had raided several locations, including the residence of Bhupinder Singh Hani, in January this year, in which 10 crore cash, jewellery worth Rs 21 lakh and a Rolex watch were recovered. Honey was arrested from Jalandhar on February 3, 2022, in connection with the illegal sand mining case. On February 7, the ED had issued a statement stating that Bhupinder Singh had admitted to having received Rs 10 crore in cash in lieu of assisting in sand mining-related activities, appointment and transfer of officers in the border state.

The investigating agency had said in its statement that Honey was summoned to appear in person before the agency on February 3 along with some documents. Honey came and gave his statements. He confessed that he was involved in mining activities, but when the data that proved the guilt was kept, he started to complain. Now the Congress has come down to the blame game, seeing itself surrounded. While the Congress party is describing the action as politically motivated, Punjab Chief Minister Channi is saying that the law is doing its job and he has no objection to it.
