Tulisa, the UK singer and TV personality, has shared her experience of being demisexual during an honest discussion on I'm A Celebrity this Tuesday. The 36-year-old, who is widely known for her role as a former judge on The X Factor, is currently competing on the Australian reality show with nine other celebrities.
Taking a break from the competition, Tulisa opened up about her personal life and revealed that she has been celibate for over three years. "Even though I’ve been on there, I’ve never gone on an actual date with anyone on there. I’m proper guarded," she said, explaining why she’s hesitant to use dating apps.
She went on to share that her sexual attraction is deeply tied to an emotional connection. "I feel like I’m demisexual, I need to have a really close emotional bond with someone. I need actual depth. I’m a slow, slow burner," Tulisa explained.
For Tulisa, the idea of being intimate with someone she doesn’t have a meaningful connection with makes her feel physically ill. This reflects just how important emotional intimacy is to her in relationships.
Tulisa also mentioned that she enjoys being single and values her independence. "I actually do enjoy being single, I enjoy being on my own," she said, emphasizing that her focus remains on emotional satisfaction rather than the typical dating norms.
What is Demisexuality?
Demisexuality is a sexual orientation where a person only feels sexual attraction after developing a strong emotional connection with someone. It is considered part of the asexual spectrum, which involves experiencing little or no sexual attraction. The term “demisexual” was first coined in 2006 by a member of the asexual community in an online forum.
While the exact number of demisexual people worldwide is unclear, a UK census in 2021 recorded that 0.06% of the population identifies as asexual, meaning demisexuality could fall under this category.
