Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised concerns with an Orange alert, signaling heavy to very heavy rain, for the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on December 17 and 18. This alert particularly focuses on southern Tamil Nadu, predicting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts like Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.
Several southern districts in Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, are already grappling with severe waterlogging as a result of heavy rainfall on Sunday. Responding to the anticipated weather conditions, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is deploying four teams equipped with rescue gear to Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has taken proactive measures by initiating the distribution of Rs 6,000 in cash assistance to families affected by the rains and floods caused by cyclone Michaung. The cash relief program is specifically aimed at assisting residents in Chennai and nearby areas, encompassing the districts of Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur. Stalin personally engaged in handing out cash assistance to women who head families in Velachery, an area severely impacted by the adverse weather.
The distribution process involves issuing tokens specifying the date and time for cash distribution at local ration shops, a strategy initiated a few days ago to streamline and expedite the relief efforts.
