Chennai: Several regions of Tamil Nadu continue to experience heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon strengthens in the area. Reports of landslides and widespread flooding have surfaced from various locations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates heavy rain with thundershowers in at least 12 districts on Friday. In response to the prevailing weather conditions, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in two districts. Schools in Thiruvarur district and Karaikkal in Puducherry will be closed starting today.

The IMD's Chennai office predicts substantial rainfall in areas such as Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Thenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari, as communicated by the Regional Meteorological Centre.

Due to a landslide and fallen trees disrupting the track between Kallar and Coonoor sections of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, two services are canceled by the Railways until November 16. Passenger special trains, 06136 and 06137, operating from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam and vice versa, are affected during this period.

Severe waterlogging has been reported in cities such as Madurai, Coimbatore, and Thoothukudi on Thursday. Landslides occurred near Kunjappa-Panai in Coimbatore and on the Mettupalayam highway in the Kotagiri Mettupalayam region.

In response to the challenging weather conditions, schools were closed in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Madurai, Theni, and Dindigul districts on Thursday.

The weather forecast attributes the intense rainfall to a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area, strong easterly/northeasterly winds, and a low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea.
