KOLKATA: At a Durga idol immersion fiesta in Raiganj, North Dinajpur district of West Bengal, late on Friday night, an ox ran amok, leaving one person dead and eight others with serious injuries.

Sadhan Karmakar has been identified as the deceased. He was critically ill when he was admitted to Raiganj Medical College & Hospital, and he passed away shortly after. The eight additional injured people are presently receiving care at the same hospital even though they were only discovered after a serious accident.

Anushilon Club, a local Puja group that took part in the immersion carnival, organised the idols' transportation on oxen. Witnesses said that when one of the oxen suddenly turned wild, the issue began. As soon as it was liberated from the carriage, it began to assault everybody gathered there. Several people were hurt and one person died as a result of the incident.

The idol of Goddess Durga that was placed in the carriage was severely harmed. Eyewitnesses said, the entire incident lasted less than a minute before the ox fled the site after going on the rampage.

Md. Ghulam Rabbani, the West Bengal Cabinet Minister of State for Minority Affairs & Madrassah Education, and a local Trinamool Congress MLA attended the event.

Meanwhile, a number of Raiganj residents have criticised the district administration for the incident and said that the concerned community Puja committee should not have been permitted to employ ox-drawn vehicles.

"As a citizen, I feel guilty about what occurred at Raiganj because the administration permitted a community puja committee to engage in an act that ultimately resulted in fatalities. According to Sharmishtha Ghosh, the authorities didn't appear to take any lessons from the massacre caused by the Jalpaiguri flash flood.

While thousands of people had gathered along the river bank for the occasion of Vijaya Dashami, a flash flood in the Mal River in Malbazar in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Wednesday night claimed the lives of eight people and left several others missing.
