Due to the incessant rainfall and is continuing, several parts of the city particularly low-lying areas were flooded with rainwater causing hardships to residents on Tuesday morning. The overnight rains led to water logging in many areas like Velachery, Madipakkam, Saidapet, KK Nagar, Adambakkam, Anna Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Vysarpadi, Perambur, Purasaiwalkam, Kellys and suburbs surrounding Tambaram. 

“Several shops along the Bazaar road were forced to close after the rainwater entered into the shops. People are finding it difficult to wade through the knee-deep water with several two-wheelers and cars breaking down in the flooded road,” said M Arun, a shopkeeper at Saidapet Bazaar Road. Subways were found to be waterlogged. People feel difficult to reach the Central railway station since the roads were flooded everywhere. Several parts of Chennai received moderate to heavy rains on Tuesday under the influence of an easterly trough. The past 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Tuesday, the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 6 cm and 5 cm rainfall respectively. 

Maduranthakam and Hindustan University in Chengalpet district recorded 6 cm each till 8.30 am, those at Taramani, Kelambakkam, Kolapakkam and Anna University in and around Chennai and Tindivanam in Villupuram district recorded 5 cm. This was followed by Tambaram with 4 cm of rainfall. S Balachandran, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai said, “Over the next 24 hours, Chennai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvannamalai will receive heavy rainfall. Subsequently, on January 6, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Villupuram". He adds, Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in the city for the rest of the day.
