Hyderabad: In a recent turn of events, the Telangana Congress chief, Revanth Reddy, along with several other prominent party leaders, found themselves in a situation that led to their detainment near the Martyrs' Memorial, located in Hyderabad's Gun Park. The local police cited violations of the model code of conduct as the primary reason for halting their intended visit to the memorial. Consequently, this situation escalated into confrontations between law enforcement and the Congress leaders, eventually leading to their detention. Subsequently, they were released and dropped off at the Congress headquarters, known as Gandhi Bhawan.
This incident unfolded following a bold challenge made by Revanth Reddy to the state's Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao. Reddy urged the Chief Minister to visit the Martyrs' Memorial and publicly pledge to abstain from engaging in practices like offering inducements, which may include items such as alcohol and cash, during the upcoming election cycle.
In a prior development, the Bharatiya Rashtravadi Samanata Party (BRS) made allegations that the Telangana Congress was receiving financial support from the Karnataka government for the forthcoming elections. In a play on words, they referred to the party as 'scamgress,' insinuating unethical or corrupt practices within the Congress party.
Over the last week, the Telangana police force has been actively confiscating substantial amounts of cash, precious metals, liquor, and other items considered as freebies. The estimated total value of these seized items has been assessed at approximately Rs 100 crore, with confiscations occurring at various locations throughout the state.
The upcoming state assembly elections for Telangana encompass 119 constituencies and are scheduled to take place on November 30.
