In the opening session of the third Test at Headingley ( Leeds), India gained the much-needed breakthroughs of openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed as bowler Mohammed Shami and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ripped through the English batsmen's defences.
At the starting of the second day's play, both Haseeb Hameed and Burns played very carefully, but the latter was scalped by a Shami delivery. After 63 overs, England was at 159/2, with an 81-run advantage. On Wednesday, England dominated the opening day at Headingley, dismissing India for 78 in their first innings.
James Anderson took three for six while Sam Curran, Ollie Robinson and Craig Overton all chipped in with the ball to hand the advantage to England. After a fine show by the bowlers, England openers Burns and Hameed put on an unbeaten 120-run opening stand to take the hosts to a lead of 42 with all 10 wickets in hand at stumps on Day 1.
