COLOMBO: In the midst of an unprecedented political crisis and economic instability, India gave Sri Lanka the assurance on Saturday that it would continue to assist democracy, stability, and economic recovery in the country.

Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay  gave the promise to Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, at a meeting.

A day after Speaker Abeywardena accepted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation, the meeting was held.

The Indian High Commission said that during the meeting, High Commissioner Baglay "recognised Parliament's role in safeguarding democracy and Constitutional framework, especially at this vital time." The mission stated that it had "conveyed that will continue to assist democracy, stability, and economic recovery in Sri Lanka."
A severe lack of foreign currency is impeding the import of necessities like food, fuel, and medicines, and Sri Lanka is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis in seven decades. After a popular movement against the government led Rajapaksa to flee the country and resign as president, the economic crisis also precipitated a political crisis in the nation.

Sri Lankan MPs convened on Saturday to start the process of selecting a successor to Mr. Rajapaksa, who is now travelling in Singapore.

The island nation off the southeast coast of India will require roughly $5 billion over the next six months to provide for its 22 million residents, who have been suffering from lengthy lines, deteriorating shortages, and power outages. India has been the principal source of foreign assistance to Sri Lanka this year.
