India-Bangladesh rail service resumed after 55 years

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina reviewed the relationship between the two countries through a video conference. Speaking at the event, PM Modi called Bangladesh an important pillar of India's 'Neighborhood First' policy. PM Modi said that his government has tried to improve relations with Bangladesh.

PM Modi said, "Strengthening relations with Bangladesh is a priority for me from day one." He said, 'This year has been full of challenges due to Corona epidemic. During this time there has been good cooperation between our countries in the field of working with health professions, corona vaccine etc. PM Modi praised the Bangladesh government for dealing with the coronavirus epidemic, saying, "I must applaud you for the way your government has dealt with corona." Both the top leaders have restarted the Chilhati-Haldibari rail link. This is a cross-border railway line and it has been restored after 55 years. This is the fifth pre-1965 railway link between the two countries, which has been resumed.

During her summit, PM Hasina has called India a true friend of Bangladesh. She also paid tribute to the soldiers who were martyred during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina said, 'I pay deep tribute to the 3 million martyrs who lost their lives in that bad time. I pay tribute to the members of the Indian armed forces who died in the 1971 war. I thank the Government of India and the people of India, who wholeheartedly supported our liberation. '
