India becomes member of United Nation's ECOSOC

Washington: India has got a place in the Organization of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) beating China in the United Nations. India has become a member of the United Nations Commission of Women. India's permanent representative in the United Nations TS Tirumurthy has given information in this regard. India, Afghanistan and China were in the race to join the organisation.

India will remain a member of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for four years. TS Tirumurthy said in the tweet that, "India has gained a seat in the body of the prestigious ECOSOC! India has been made a member of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW). It promotes gender equality and women empowerment. It shows our commitment. We thank the member countries for their support."

There was a competition between India, China and Afghanistan to get this seat in the commission. India and Afghanistan were supported by most of the 54 members, while China did not get the support of even half of the members. India will remain a member of the United Nations Commission on Status of Women for four years (2021 to 2025).
