India has got another major success in terms of self-reliance in the defense sector. In fact, the Indian Navy has successfully tested the anti-submarine missile system. The Indian Navy on Wednesday successfully test-fired the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) missile system off the coast of Balasore in Odisha. The supersonic missile system took off from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island at around 8:30 am on Wednesday. It is a next generation missile system, which is based on Lightweight Torpedo Delivery System. It has also been designed and developed by DRDO itself.

Important in anti-submarine warfare: Reports say that this missile system is very important in anti-submarine warfare. This missile is capable of hitting long range targets. SMART missile is going to be launched from warships as well as coastal areas. This missile completes most of its flight in the air at low altitude and after reaching near its target, it is successful in hitting the underwater target by releasing the torpedo from the missile.

Many modern sub-systems are also being provided in this canister-based missile system, these include two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, navigation system etc. This system is flying with a light weight torpedo as payload, it has a parachute based release system. In today's test, separation of the torpedo from the missile system and other technical aspects have been examined.
