New Delhi: The Central Government has given FCRA license to Gyuto Tantric Monastery for five years. The monastery belonged to the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. The monastery was also a temporary residence for the Karmapa. In 2011, the Himachal Police, while searching the monastery, claimed to have recovered 7.05 crore foreign currency. However, later the Karmapa was given a clean chit.

Speaking to the media, the Abbot of Gyuto Monastery, Lobsang Khedup, confirmed the developments saying, 'FCRA license is for receiving donations from abroad, especially from the US'. The Karmapa, who arrived in India suddenly in 2000, obtained a Commonwealth of Dominica passport in 2017-18. However, India never recognized the 36-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader. After the Dalai Lama, he is one of the most followed religious leaders among Tibetans and India is trying to connect with him. It is said that he is traveling around European countries in connection with his teachings.

Officials have told the media that the monastery has been given an FCRA license under the religious-cum-education category for Buddhist teachings. He said that the license is valid for five years i.e. till 2027. This step is very important because the border dispute between India and China in eastern Ladakh is intrinsically linked to the Tibet issue. There was a violent clash between Indian and Chinese forces in eastern Ladakh since May 2020. So far 15 rounds of military-diplomatic talks have taken place.
