Renowned in the educational and healthcare spheres across India, Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar, the founder of NIMS University Rajasthan, has been designated as the International Chair of the World Health Summit. This appointment acknowledges Prof. Tomar's first rate leadership and contributions and also stands as a famed accomplishment for both NIMS University and the nation as a whole.

This marks the first-of-its-kind instance of an Indian assuming the role of International President at World Health Summit. Chief Patrons of the summit include Olaf Scholz- Chancellor of Germany; Emmanuel Macron- President of France; and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus- Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The World Health Summit serves as the Global Forum for discussions on health-related matters. It convenes leaders in politics, science, and the private sector worldwide to establish a blueprint for a healthy future, aiming for advancements in health and development for all. The summit stresses global health as a major political concern and gives confidence to debates aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

With his distinguished leadership and extensive expertise spanning the dominions of healthcare, education, and administration, Prof. Tomar is perched to steer the organization towards unprecedented success and influence. The World Health Summit is scheduled to take place from October 13 to 15, 2024, in Berlin, Germany. Additionally, NIMS University is a member of the M8 Alliance, a consortium of international health universities that annually organizes the "World Health Summit" in Germany.

The international platform recently commended Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for India's progressive outlook, their comprehensive strategy in managing COVID-19, and the "Vaccine Maitri" initiative, which ensured the accessibility of beds, essential medicines, N-95 masks, and personal protective equipment.

The African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group, comprising 79 members, along with the 15-member Caribbean Community, lauded India at the World Trade Organization (WTO) for its expedition of vaccine supplies during critical times. Under the "Vaccine Maitri" initiative, India has provided 36.37 million vaccine doses to 35 countries and UN health workers.

Prof. Tomar expressed delight as India has been selected as the host country for the World Health Summit 2025, emphasizing the nation's grasp of knowledge, science, and development. He also highlighted that this decision not only fills the nation with immense pride but also entails a responsibility.

In association with Vision@2047, Prof. Tomar accentuated India's dedication to sustainable development and addressing climate change. He outlined plans to augment self-reliance in defense and space sectors, lift India's global standing, enhance renewable energy capacity, and diminish carbon emissions.

Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar is a celebrated figure in the medical and health sector, not only within India but also internationally. Widely acknowledged as a distinguished pediatrician, Professor Tomar has earned the moniker of the “Father of Pediatric Gastroenterology” for his novel research contributions towards finding a cure for Indian Childhood Cirrhosis. His achievements have been documented with prestigious accolades such as the Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in pediatrics and gastroenterology.

Characterized by an exceptional work ethic, thoughtful insight, and remarkable talent, Prof. Tomar is an unforgettable face in the health industry. He has been across India and the globe, unifying traditional and modern medical practices in healthcare delivery. His professional journey started at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Rajasthan. In collaboration with the Ministry of Family Welfare and the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health, Prof. Tomar orchestrated an International Conference titled “Integration of Indian Medicinal Systems in Modern Medicine,” an initiative that earned him the Lifetime Achievement Award from the former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Ashok Gehlot.

Prof. Tomar has been a staunch advocate for the integration of traditional personalized medicine into mainstream healthcare practices, a viewpoint he dwelled upon during a global conference on "Consensus of Child and Pediatric Health (CIP)" in China in March 2016. Presently, he holds positions as the Director of the Institute of Organ Transplant, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Hepatology, along with serving as the President of the Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Transplant, and Nutrition.

As preparations commence for the World Health Summit 2025, India stands on the brink of showcasing its diligence in partnerships, knowledge exchange, and taking decisive action toward attaining universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2023, NIMS University Rajasthan secured a position in the executive body of the 'World Health Conference' - M8 Alliance, distinguishing itself as one of only 31 medical centres and institutions globally holding membership within the M8 Alliance. Note that the “Inter Academy Partnership” represents the National Medicine Academies of over 100 countries.

The M8 Alliance places much emphasis on overall academic excellence and institutional quality within their respective countries, as well as expertise in global health and inclusivity, among other criteria. These parameters also highlight the NIMS University's steadfast commitment to advancing education, healthcare, and social development.
