New Delhi: Amid the ongoing military standoff in eastern Ladakh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed hope to resolve the remaining issues with China. In an interview with a news agency, he emphasized that a return to normal bilateral ties between India and China depended on peace and tranquility at the border. Discussing the remaining issues, Jaishankar highlighted concerns regarding "patrolling rights" and "patrolling abilities" along the border.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an interview with Newsweek, underscored the importance of a stable relationship between India and China, not just for the two nations but for the entire region and the world. He also emphasized the urgency of addressing the border dispute between the two countries. Responding to PM Modi's statement, Jaishankar stated that the Prime Minister had presented a "big picture" viewpoint on the matter. He stressed that every country seeks good relations with its neighbors.
Acknowledging that India's relationship with China is currently not normal due to disturbances in the border areas, Jaishankar expressed hope that the Chinese side would realize that the present situation is not in its own interest. Describing diplomacy as a "work of patience," Jaishankar noted that India continued to engage in discussions with China. He emphasized the need to resolve the issues to restore normalcy in the relationship.
Highlighting the significance of addressing unfriendly situations at the border, Jaishankar stated, "After all, if somebody is at your front door in an unfriendly manner, you are not going to go out there and act as though everything is normal." Despite the disengagement from several friction points, both countries have been involved in a border standoff since May 2020, with a full resolution of the border row still pending.
Regarding the increasing bilateral trade volume with China, despite the strained ties, Jaishankar mentioned, "Such a scenario has arisen as adequate attention to the manufacturing sector was not given before 2014." The 2020 Galwan Valley clash marked a significant deterioration in bilateral ties between the two countries.
