The birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former President of India, is celebrated on 5 September as Teachers' Day all over the country. He had expressed a wish to his students to celebrate his birthday as Teacher's Day. Teachers' Day is celebrated on different dates in more than 100 countries of the world.

The First Vice-President of the country, Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in the village of Tirumani, Tamil Nadu to a Brahmin couple. He was fond of reading books since childhood and was greatly influenced by Swami Vivekananda. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan believed strongly in education. He was a great philosopher and teacher. He was very fond of studies and teaching. He had all the qualities of an ideal teacher.
