Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced in a tweet on Friday that he has approved a proposed GSR notification that would make a minimum of six airbags mandatory for motor vehicles with up to eight people. Gadkari further stated in a series of tweets that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has already ordered the installation of driver airbags beginning July 1, 2019 and front co-passenger airbags beginning January 1, 2019.

Dual front airbags have been needed since January 1st of this year, although they are only for the driver and front co-passenger in the event of a frontal collision. The new rule requiring side curtain airbags on new cars will assure occupant safety in the event of a side accident.
